Tip
#1
Schedule a routine maintenance call
Schedule a routine maintenance call at the beginning
of the cooling season. remember to call in early
to avoid the rush of that first hot spell we
get every year. This thorough check-up will
help to ensure your system is working efficiently,
safely and reliably day-in, day-out to keep
your family as comfortable as possible. In a
typical maintenance call, you can expect that
the service technician will clean the condensing
unit and check the thermostat, electrical wiring,
fan motor, filters and compressor.
Tip #2
Check your air filter monthly
Check your air filter at least once per month
during the cooling season. A dirty filter will
restrict airflow and will make your air conditioning
system work harder than necessary, driving up
your electric bill and putting unnecessary wear
and tear on the system.
Tip #3
Inspect your caulking and weather stripping
Inspect the caulking and weather stripping around
the windows and doors in your home periodically
to see if it’s time to reapply either
of these materials. Don’t end up footing
the bill to cool the neighborhood by giving
cool indoor air an escape hatch to the outdoors.
Tip #4
Don’t obstruct air flow
Make sure the supply-air and return-air registers
inside your home allow the air to flow freely.
Throughout the season check to ensure that furniture,
window coverings, toys or other obstructions
do not block the grills.
Tip #5
Learn to trouble-shoot problems
If your cooling system doesn’t seem to
be working properly, take a few simple trouble-shooting
steps before you call for help. 1. Check the
“disconnect” switches on both the
indoor and outdoor units of your system making
sure the system is turned on. 2. Make sure the
circuit breakers are in the “on”
position and that the fuses have not blown.
Tip #6
Ask your technician if repairs or a new
system makes more sense
If your system is more than 10 years old or
requires more than minor repairs, ask our comfort
consultants if it makes more sense to replace
your existing system with a newer one. There
are many models available today that perform
with improved energy efficiency, resulting in
the lower utility bills and lower overall operating
costs.
We hope these tips will help your family stay
cool and save valuable dollars this summer.
